"And it came to pass."
"And it came to pass."
Genesis 4:1-8.
Genesis 4:6-8 - "And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him.
"And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him."
He was wroth because his offering was not accepted and his countenance fell as a result of envy toward his brother Abel. His ego was altered before his brother's face and he began to nurture how to eliminate him.
Cain didn't carry out his vicious act against his brother overnight, he actually nursed it for a while. Because the Word says, "and it came to pass", which means, he had planned it before he made it happened. He was already caught up in the web of envy and contempt towards Abel his brother.
And God saw his contrary motives and his fallen countenance. But He appeared to act as if nothing happened. God already saw what he was about to do to his brother and warned him.
God knew Cain has the ability to overcome his evil thought and the sin of murder which was just at the door of his heart and cautioned him. But he took God's warning with levity, because he was already determined to kill.
To be envious leads to hatred and to hate is tantamount to killing. Cain did not only envied his brother, he hated him so much, such that killing him was not an issue to him. Envy and hatred has terrible consequences and eternal if not confronted.
But he was already dogged to do the worse to his brother and he disobeyed God. "And it came to pass," this also means from the time the good Lord warned him, he has been on it to carry out this evil act until he was taken up by it.
God was terribly grieved about the death of Abel by the hand of his brother Cain who made himself available for the enemy to use. He didn't just killed his brother but an innocent man who did him no wrong.
But the consequences was eternally awful for Cain. And by the severity of his sin, he was cursed by God, marked for life as a cursed man, a fugitive and a vagabond and his posterity in the family of Adam was also affected.
Though Cain's name and his offspring was only mentioned in Genesis chapter four from verses seventeen to twenty-three. But he was omitted from God's own detailed genealogy. He lost his posterity.
Thus, in the genealogy of Adam, God had to detail them out again in Genesis chapter five from verses three to thirty-two, God omitted Cain's name, which started from Seth to Noah.
Again in first Chronicles chapter one to chapter two verses one to fifteen, his name was omitted from the genealogy of Adam to king David.
Before you do anything awful and sinful, the merciful God would have been speaking to your heart and warning you before hand even with signs and pointers. In order to save you from its consequences.
But it's up to you to make your choice. Either unto mercy when you heed to His voice or unto condemnation when you disobey Him.
Many a time a people don't understand the terrible effect of committing an evil. Some like, envy and hatred are very grevious and leads to forever punishment. But God in His mercy do not want any to fall away into perdition.
Yet, He cautions and many will not heed until the deed is done and the effect becomes irreversible. Imagine what an eternal error for Cain to be the first murderer recorded in the Bible. And it's forever written against him which cannot be cleansed or reversed.
One major thing that was missing in Cain's life toward his brother was a heart to love. He lacked love and was void of love. God's warning was out of love and wanted him to repent but he refused and killed Abel. If he had love and repented, he would have overcome the hatred in his heart by God's help and mercy.
He took God for granted, he felt too familiar with Him. He disregarded God's warning and still responded rudely to his Creator after he killed his brother. What a blunder!
Many a time over familiarity in our relationship with God is dangerous. May we not take Him for granted and may we heed to His command to love our neighbor as ourselves in Jesus Name.
God's Loving Heart.
